Hawm Gra Dang Ngah rice variety was collected from Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province. A promising line, PTNC09002-59 was selected as a uniform best plant type from the 59th row of 200 rows. It is a photoperiod – sensitive, non-glutinous rice which flowering occurs in mid February. It has 131 cm height and 10 panicles per hill. An average grain yield under intra-station yield trial (Pattani) was 501 kilograms per rai. Paddy hull is straw-colored and grain shape is slender. Brown rice is red and the grain length is 6.33 mm. It has moderate amylose content, hard gel and medium spreading value. Quality of cooked rice is sleazy-crumbly with aromatic. It is popularly in Narathiwat and the products has been made for sale. Besides, there are nutritional...

DNA fingerprints are DNA banding patterns obtaining from DNA samples that have been undergone through molecular genetic processes. These DNA fingerprints can be used to identify the genetic relationships or differences among individuals. DNA fingerprints will be very useful for plant varietal protection in the future, especially for those economically important crops. Regarding to plant varietal protection, an information used to describe agronomic characteristics of a given plant variety should follow Mendelian rules and not be affected by environments. DNA fingerprints of 33 Thai recommended rice varieties were conducted by using 32 DNA markers. The DNA banding patterns at each locus were compared to allele standards that have been conducted from 17 rice...

SSR molecular markers SSR are tandem arranged repeats of short DNA motifs (1-6 bp in length) distributed throughout the genome that frequently exhibit variation in the number of repeats at the locus of each rice variety. The SSR markers, therefore, are suitable for detecting polymorphisms between closely related genotypes of Thai local rice varieties from the National Rice Germplasm Bank. In this research, DNA fingerprinting was conducted using 8 Thai local rice varieties. i.e., Niaw Sanpahtawng (NSPT_GB), Khao Gaw Diaw (KGD_GB), Niaw Dam (ND_GB), Khao tah Haeng 17 (KTH17_GB), Jao’ Haw (JH_GB), Pin Gaew 56 (PG56_GB), Jek Chuey Gahb Khiaw (JCGK_GB), Sang Yod Pattalung (SYPL_GB), and 5 standard varieties, i.e., Khao Dawk Mali 105 (KDML105_GB, KDML105_C),...

Aromatic rice is a specific group of rice having high price in the world rice market. A fragrant trait is therefore included in the principal goal for rice production and improvement. A recessive gene on chromosome 8 has been elucidated to be homology with the gene encoded for betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH2). In fragrant rice this gene was mutated by 8 bp deletion in exon 7 resulting in accumulation of 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP). In this study, the BADEX7-5 primer which is specific for the fragrant gene (badh2) was tested by a conventional PCR and a Real-time PCR. Both methods showed the same PCR product size of 95 and 103 bp in fragrant and non-fragrant rice, respectively. DNA sequencing and nucleotide alignment of those PCR products showed that...

Evaluation of rice varieties/lines against bacterial leaf blight (BLB) and neck blast (NB) is one of the activities that necessary for rice improvements. The experiments were carried out in experimental fields at Udon Thani Rice Research Center in 2014. A total of 479 and 200 rice varieties/lines from breeding programs and the rice germplasm bank were selected and evaluated for BLB and NB resistance, respectively. The clip inoculation method was used for BLB screening while NB screening was conducted in the field with natural infestation. The results showed that 19 varieties/lines were resistant to BLB and 164 varieties/lines were likely resistant to NB. The resistant cultivars/lines can be directly developed into resistant varieties or can be used as...

Blast and bacterial leaf blight diseases are major diseases, which cause damage to yield and quality of rice in Thailand. Evaluation of rice lines/varieties from rice gene germplasm bank (Rice Department) and rice germplasm from International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) under the International network for genetic evaluation of rice (INGER). Reaction test to blast and bacterial leaf blight diseases, with the objective for blast and bacterial blight evaluation resistance of rice lines/varieties, were conducted at Chainat Rice Research Center in 2008 – 2014. 1,200 rice germplasms were used for reaction test to blast disease. Blast disease evaluation at seedling stage was conducted under the upland short row conditions (natural infections). The results...

Bacterial blight (BB) disease of rice, caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo), is one of the most serious diseases in all major rice-growing areas of Thailand. The most effective approach to control BB is the use of resistant varieties. However, the selection pressure from the usage of resistant cultivars may result in mutation of the pathogen population to overcome the resistance genes. Therefore, using genetic resources conferring different resistance genes are more advantage in rice improvement. The aim of this research was to survey and screen BB resistance genes in Thai local rice varieties from the National Rice Seed Storage Laboratory for Genetic Resources to gain more genetic diversity for resistance. In this study, the Thai Local rice...
